Obstacles modelling reality: Two exploratory studies on physics defined and undefined problems

2014

For some researchers, and perhaps for many teachers, problem-solving is strongly related to thinking (Mayer, 1983). Several reports highlight the importance of developing suitable skills to solve complex, ill-defined and boundless real-life problems in educated people (NSF Standards, U.S. Department of Labour, ABET engineering accreditation organization, and American Institute of Physics, mentioned in Etkina & Van Heuvelen, 2007; Bureau of Labour Statistics, U.S. Department of Labour, 2014; Competency Model Clearinghouse, 2012). Problem-solving is virtually the core of the professional activity of a physicist (Etkina, Van Heuvelen, White-Brahmia, Brookes, Gentile, Murthy, Rosengrant & Warre…

Orchestrating 21st century learning in higher education: A perspective on student voice

2016

For universities to meet the 21st-century learning needs of today's students, it is important they allow students to take an active role in developing pedagogy and sharing their perspective. This paper introduces design-based research aiming to develop a pedagogic approach to support technology-enhanced learning practices at the university level with the focus on teacher orchestration of learning activities and student voice. Drawing from the perspectives of teachers and students who participated in a course focused on learning and 21st-century competencies, four main elements indicating student voice and technology-enhanced pedagogy are presented: increased interaction among university com…

Temporary contracts and young women in Spain

2008

In this article we analyse the determinants of temporary employment through a balanced panel of workers from 1995 to 2000. First, we estimate a panel with 1267 individuals with ages ranging from 16 to 65 years. We obtain that the probability of having a temporary contract increases for people younger than 46 years old. Secondly, we estimate separately the sample of people younger than 46 years old and we obtain that the probability of temporality increases for young people with university level of education. More interestedly, the probability of being in a temporary contract is smaller for young women that for young men in Spain.

Factors related to study success in engineering education

2005

Recent studies on student learning in higher education have paid attention to the relationships between characteristics of the learning environment and students' study orientations and study success. The purpose of the present paper is to examine these relationships in university level engineering education. The data were collected from Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland, by means of an Internet survey (n=394). Grade point average, credits per semester and students' qualitative evaluation of their learning outcomes were used as indicators of study success. The findings of the study indicate that students' perceptions of their learning environment were related to their study orie…

A computer-based diagnostic tutor for average velocity

1991

Abstract The concept of average velocity is often misunderstood, even by students at university level. To analyse student reasoning about average velocity, students who were being instructed in kinematics in an introductory physics course were shown a series of computer animations of two cars moving independently. Their answers to subsequent questions tended to use partial knowledge elements present in the problem. On this basis, a list of eight procedures used by students was drawn up and used as the basis of a computer-based diagnostic tutor, Velo. The performance of Velo is being compared with human tutors.

El largo camino: recorrido de la fisioterapia hacia la práctica independiente

2010

The Long March is a review of the origins and development of the Physical Therapy profession in the United States since the beginning of the 20th century. It shows the evolution experienced since that time of its professional profile, name and academic training received. It is shown how the relationship between the physical therapist and physician has grown and evolved into a relationship of mutual respect and of improvement in the professional practice. On the other hand, the principal milestones in the long march of the physical therapy profession from the time of its birth as a profession that was totally dependent on the physician to its current status as a profession with professionals…

National Performance-Based Research Funding Systems : Constructing Local Perceptions of Research?

2019

AbstractIn recent years, performance-based research funding systems (PRFSs) have been introduced in all of the Nordic countries. In this chapter, we compare these systems and explore how their introduction is reflected within universities. Through interviews with academics, managers and administrators, we study how the performance measures of these systems are used at the university level and how that affects research activities. The results indicate that the introduction of PRFSs at the national level have had significant effects at the institutional level. The PRFSs contribute to the institutionalisation and consolidation of research metrics as the main way to describe research performanc…

Redesigning the Curriculum to Develop Multilingual Academic Literacies: An Analysis of Language Conceptualizations

2020

Teaching and learning languages for academic purposes have for a long time had an important role in Finnish Higher Education. In this chapter, we analyse the curriculum for multilingual and disciplinary language and communication studies developed at the University of Jyvaskyla, which can be seen as one initiative to rethink the ways of organizing the development of language and communication skills at the university level. We are especially interested in how the curriculum is discursively constructed and what kinds of conceptions of language are built into the description of learning outcomes in the curriculum across different disciplines. Our results indicate that multilingual approach is…
